Vino Et Spiritus - About Us
Vinarija (winery in Serbian) Jović is a family run winery that was established in 1987 by two brothers Saša and Jovan Jović who come from a long line of grape growers and winemakers. Their estate vineyards are located in the Village of Potrkanje, a short drive from the south eastern Serbian town of Knjaževac.  The vineyards are centered in the appellation of Negotin on the sunny hillside slopes which have been cultivated since antiquity. The Roman site “Timacum Minus”, which is located 2 km (a little over a mile) away from the estate vineyards, dates back to the first century A.D. The site was a fortified stone city with a garrison. According to scrolls excavated from the site the soldiers stationed in the garrison protected ore being mined within the hills and wine produced from the slopes. Apparently the Romans had a keen eye for good wine.

timokWe’re not sure which varietals the Romans preferred, but the varietals lovingly tended to by the Jović brothers are: Chardonnay, Rhine Riesling, Vranac and Muscat Hamburg. They use a blend of modern equipment and traditional methods to produce wines of the highest quality. Stainless steel temperature controlled fermenters are used to preserve the wonderful fruit flavors; basket presses to gently separate the juice from the skins and oak barrels to mellow the red wines. The yields are limited from their 9 hectares of vineyards, but the vines benefit from long hot days and cool nights. It’s not uncommon for the temperature to top 100° Fahrenheit during the day and drop to below 50° at night which allows to grapes to get really ripe while preserving the natural acidity. Thus the wines are rich and ripe but balanced and elegant at the same time.

The Jović brothers use only their estate grown fruit to produce these excellent wines which have received numerous awards and medals. If you want to live happy and healthy, your choice of our wines is the right one.
